 Growing up in Malaysia, many of us would most likely have already been aware of some of the nutritional wonders of dates. We know that it’s a great source of energy (which is why Muslims are encouraged to ‘Sahur’ and break their fast with dates). We also know it contains a lot of important nutrients which is good for the body. However, there’s actually A LOT more benefits still packed in this wonderful fruit. Let’s take a look at some lesser known blessings of dates.

 1. Source of fibre Dates are natural sources of fibre. Fibre has an important role in promoting good bowel movement, to support a healthy digestive system.

 2. Provides antioxidants One particular variant of dates, The Hallawi, is a good source of catechins - compounds that are often found in tea which is a type of antioxidant to ward off free radicals in the body.

 3. Helps regulate blood pressure Dates also contain high amounts of potassium, which helps promote the excretion of excess sodium and water, while regulating blood pressure.

 4. Good for the eyes Among the causes of night blindness is the deficiency of Vitamin A. Surprise, surprise! Vitamin A can also be found in dates, which is important to support proper vision.

 5. Loaded with minerals Minerals like phosphorus, calcium and magnesium help reinforce bone tissue, and is important for strengthening and supporting bone health. Research has found that dates contain these minerals, which are important for supporting strong bones.
